so how much does music have to do with musicians? it seems that many of the big bands of today are nothing more than actors for the likes of mtv and fellow corporate sponsors. auditions are being held this very moment to see who fits the role for the next up and coming smash hitters ready to make a ten million dollars by singing prescription-strength pop songs and wearing designer clothes. not a bad gig if you can get the work….and not hate yourself. if mainstream music isn’t coming from musicians anymore where is it coming from? who is behind this airbrushed mockery and what do they want with record sales? even much-vaunted bastions of independence and original thought are being co-opted—from punk rock’s de-evolution into blink-182 and avril lavigne, to hip-hop’s descent into sexology with the likes of nelly and that chick who does the “lick my neck, my back, my pussy to my crack” song, music is no longer being written by idealogues and visionaries with notions of revolution, change, and thoughtfulness, such as the beatles, public enemy, the sex pistols, the clash, or a thousand other bands and artists that have fallen by the wayside. the ideologues no longer use their own ideas, and the visionaries see only dollar signs. if i was paranoid, which i’m not, i swear, i would say that those who try to control what people are subjected to are trying to limit or impose on what people think and how they view creativity. i would say that they are trying to homogenize a culture (subcultures included) to better control a population, directing and misdirection, currency flows and keeping food from the hungry. aw shit, what can we do about this?…or wait, i don’t listen to that crap anyways, what do you want from me? nothing from you. i want something from me. i want something that motivates me so that next we meet i will have a smile for you. in my non-paranoia i believe that if i can make up my mind then i can make someone else think about what’s going on in theirs. and i think that a lot of people thinking can raise the candlepower up to blinding so that executives and secretaries alike are ignoring the “heavy rotations”. but i guess, in a way people already do ignore those endlessly repeated songs. in fact, i would say that those songs are made to be ignored to the point where we get them stuck in our heads to the point where we go out and buy the cd and play it really loud in the car so we can ignore it some more. if you are reading this you probably are not one of those on the human pyramid of manufactured music. in which case, i do have something to ask of you: make someone think about their music today.
