Maybe it’s me, but this woman definitely seems on the verge. She loses her train of thought, and stabs for the right word with a vague desperation in her eyes. And here’s what’s really weird – this is about as typical as it gets for a professor. They’re all losing it. They’re all burnt out and perhaps they once were brilliant but any glory in the past has now faded. That’s a bummer, I think. What causes this? Is it atrophy caused by dealing with an endless stream of greedheads-in-training who no longer even pretend to pursue a “higher” education? Is it the campus politics that makes them cower in fear from original thought in case it might disturb the cowering of their peers? It’s certainly a state so similar to being a drug burnout that you have to assume the drug in this case is academia itself. Like the people who work in airports, college professors prepare you for your journey by feeding your brain with the knowledge to succeed -- and give you a little sheepskin boarding pass to a better life. But they stay put. Obviously they’re terrified of real life and the world they’re sending you into. After all, they’re still in college.
